Ants work in a very methodical fashion. They quickly set up colonies where there is plentiful supply of food and water, and this colony is headed by a queen whose only purpose is to breed many ants. They send out scouts to look for food, and when the scout has located that slice of pizza that you left out on the counter, it quickly goes back and reports it to other members of the colony. After this, depending on the species, you will either see an entire colony of ants all moving towards the food in an orderly manner, or you may see a few random ants making their way to the food. Either way, the ant is following a scent trail that has been laid by the scout. When you find a few ants running about, don't assume that there are only a few -- the rest of them are back at the colony hard at work!
